Image to Text Converter (Free OCR, No Upload)

Extract text from images, screenshots and scanned pages with free OCR that runs in your browser. 14 languages, editable output, and your image is never uploaded.

Runs on your device — nothing is uploaded

Turn a photo of a document, a screenshot, a receipt or a scanned page into text you can copy, search and edit.

Your image never leaves your device. Most "free OCR" sites upload your file to their server and keep it for hours. This one runs the Tesseract OCR engine inside your browser, so the only thing downloaded is the language model — once — and your image is processed locally.

How to use it

  1. Drop an image in, or click choose a file.
  2. Pick the language the text is written in.
  3. Press Extract text. The first run downloads the language data (2–15 MB); after that it is cached.
  4. Edit the result if needed, then Copy or Download .txt.

Getting accurate results

OCR accuracy depends far more on the image than on the engine. In order of impact:

  • Straight and flat. A page photographed at an angle, or curving at the spine of a book, loses accuracy fast. Shoot from directly above.
  • Sharp and well lit. Blur and shadows are the most common reason for garbage output. Daylight beats a phone flash.
  • Big enough. Text should be at least 20 pixels tall. If you're working from a small screenshot, run it through the image upscaler at 2x first.
  • The right language. Recognising French with the English model drops accented characters and mangles words.
  • Crop to the text. Logos, photos and table borders produce stray characters. Crop them out first.

The confidence percentage shown after recognition is a useful sanity check: above 85% is usually clean; below 70% means the image needs work.

What it's good for

  • Copying text out of a screenshot or a photo of a whiteboard
  • Pulling a quote from a scanned book page
  • Getting the numbers off a receipt or invoice into a spreadsheet
  • Making text in an image searchable in your notes

Limits of browser OCR

This tool reads one image at a time and outputs plain text. It doesn't rebuild layouts or tables, and it doesn't read PDFs directly — take a screenshot of the page, or export pages as images first.

If you regularly digitise paperwork — whole folders of scans, multi-page PDFs, tables you need in Excel — Private OCR Studio is the desktop version: it produces searchable PDFs that keep the original page look, exports Word and CSV, extracts tables, straightens crooked scans and batch-processes a folder, all offline on Windows.

Privacy

Recognition happens in a Web Worker in your browser tab. No image, text or result is sent to GameFuntastic or anyone else. Close the tab and it's gone.
